Just like its predecessor, this game features an original new story created specifically for the game in collaboration with Marvel. Written by veteran American comic writer Kurt Busiek, the game's antagonist is Kang the Conqueror, a villain who manipulates time. Players are thrust into an interstellar battle across various Marvel locations, isolated from time and space, in the open-world hub area of "Chronopolis."
