Product Introduction
This is a 1/48 scale plastic model. The Type 97 Carrier-based Attack Aircraft incorporated several innovations, being the first Japanese Navy aircraft to feature a fully metal monocoque structure and a low-wing monoplane design. It adopted a hydraulic retractable landing gear system and a foldable wing mechanism, allowing for a reduced wingspan and easier storage on aircraft carriers. The propeller was a three-bladed, fully metal, two-step variable pitch propeller, allowing efficient engine performance during takeoff, climb, cruising, and high-speed conditions, significantly improving overall performance. It was officially adopted in November 1937 as the Type 97 Carrier-based Attack Aircraft (B5N1), initially equipped with the "Hikari" engine, which was 300hp weaker than the planned "Sakae" engine, but still exceeded Navy requirements. In the fall of 1938, when the practical use of the "Sakae" engine became feasible, it was adopted with this engine in December 1939 as the Type 97 Model 3 Carrier-based Attack Aircraft (B5N2). Mass production was switched to this model at Nakajima. The aircraft participated in the Pearl Harbor attack during the outbreak of the Pacific War in December 1941. Equipped on six aircraft carriers, the Type 97 conducted concentrated attacks using bombs and torpedoes, delivering fatal blows to the U.S. Pacific Fleet, achieving significant results. The success of torpedo attacks in shallow waters, considered impossible, was particularly notable due to the aircraft's high performance.
